Quotes

“Climb the mountains and get their glad tidings.  Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees.  The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.” – John Muir (1838-1914)

This quote can be found in the prologue of the "Manual of Mount Sunapee," which chronicled the geological, cultural and natural history of the area and spoke to the importance of public awareness in “preserving the mountain for the enjoyment of all.”   Published in 1915 by the Sunapee Chapter of the Forest Society, the manual sold for 50 cents and the proceeds went to support trail maintenance on Mount Sunapee.

The Manual is available at Abbott Library, Sunapee, NH, in the Reference Department.

“Conservation is humanity caring for the future." - Nancy Newhall

“Man shapes himself through the decisions that shape his environment.” - Rene Jules Dubos

"Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity; and that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life." - John Muir

Friends of Mount Sunapee attended this year's Saving Special Places Conference held at Kearsarge Regional High School in April (2008).

FOMS Directors Linda Dennis (left) and Brenda Shapiro (right) were on hand for the conference, set up our exhibit table and took part in workshops.

Presented by the Forest Society’s Center for Land Conservation Assistance, UNH Cooperative Extension and the State of NH Conservation Land Stewardship Program, the Saving Special Places Conference is the premier land conservation training, education and networking event in the state.

Followup:  Last year's effort to protect 1,095 acres on Mount Sunapee's eastern slope was successful!

Led by the Forest Society, this land conservation project involved the partnering of several area organizations including FOMS.  In May, 2007, the Forest Society purchased conservation easements on two parcels--845 acres in Newbury and 250 acres in Goshen--that guarantee that the properties will be permanently protected with public recreational access assured.

“Local ownership is important,” observed Jolyon Johnson, president of Friends of Mount Sunapee. “This protects not only the natural resources of the area, but assures continued public use of trails like the Andrew Brook Trail.”

“Everyone understood that the 1,100 acres was a priority to the Sunapee region,” said Debbie Stanley, executive director of the Ausbon Sargent Land Preservation Trust. “The complexity of this project required pooling fundraising sources among multiple partners.”

In addition to ASLPT and the Town of Newbury, those partners included the Friends of Mount Sunapee, Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway Club, Sunapee-Ragged-Kearsarge Greenway Coalition, the Town of Goshen, Lake Sunapee Protective Association, Rural Heritage Connection of Bradford and North Woodlands, LLC.
